The subject of local extrema of functions of one and several variables, and its consequent application to the resolution of optimization problems, constitutes one of the main objectives of the mathematical discipline for the training of computer engineers. In the traditional approach the procedure established to classify the critical points of functions of a real variable is done through two criteria fundamentally: Criterion of the first derivative and Criterion of the second derivative. However, when dealing with this same subject for functions of two variables, the analysis is done through a single criterion: Hessian criterion. This criterion is based on knowledge that does not belong to the curriculum of the mathematical discipline for the computer engineer. The objective of this work is to make an evaluation, from the methodological point of view, of the process of classification of the critical points in local extremes and to propose a methodological strategy to approach this subject in which the first order derivatives, the level curves, are present. The use of MATLAB software is proposed as a fundamental tool.
